Rich Hill completed his second season as head baseball coach at the University of San Diego, posting another winning record. In 2000 the Toreros set a school record 31 victories against Division I competition. Hill has a proven record of success as a head coach at his two previous posts. In 1998, he guided the University of San Francisco to 34 victories, including a school-record 18 victories in the West Coast Conference. In three seasons, Hill guided USF to three straight winning seasons, including two campaigns of 30 or more victories.
Hill, 38, is one of the youngest coaches in NCAA history to reach 400 career wins. He has a career record of 400-279-2 in 13 seasons. Prior to his tenure at USF, Hill led Cal Lutheran to a record of 194-76 (.719) over six seasons, including two Division III World Series appearances. Under Hill's guidance, the Kingsmen knocked off Division I opponents such as USC, Pepperdine, San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge.
In addition to his collegiate coaching positions, Hill was head coach for the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League from 1990-93, winning the league title in 1992 with a franchise record of 35-11. He has twice been recognized as the ABCA West Region Coach of the Year (1992, 1993); was the Cape Cod Baseball League 1992 "Manager of the Year"; and was twice named the SCIAC Coach of the Year.
The past four years Hill has served on the American Baseball Coaches Assn. Editorial Committee and has been an advisor with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
