Today's Drill: Relay Throw Race
Purpose: To teach quick, accurate throws to and from cutoff men in a competitive atmosphere.
Set-Up: Three outfielders are at their positions; three cutoff men are stationed in shallow left, center and right fields; three catchers are near home plate about 15 feet apart. Baseballs are set on the warning track behind each outfielder.
The Drill: On coach's command, the outfielders race to the ball, set and throw to their cutoff man, who turns and throws to the catcher. The team that completes the relay first wins.
Coaches' Corner: The competitive aspect of this drill makes it fun. Accurate throws are emphasized because if a ball is not caught by the cutoff man or catcher, the team is disqualified.
